Remember Climbing the Old Man of Hoy?
This suite of prints is based on my recollection of climbing a unique sea-stack off the coast of Orkney. The Old Man of Hoy is a distinctive geological feature and a committing climb. Its exposed position and friable sandstone give a feeling of a precarious and rocky ship in the sea, a notion reinforced by the resident curious puffins and aggressive fulmars. The prints form a book, reflecting the narrative of the climb. For the climbing figures I used acetate overlays to create ghostly imprints on the rock beneath, contrasting with the highly-textured collograph prints of the sea-stack itself. The idea was to convey how brief and transient our climb was in the life of the 'Old Man'.
